Praxeological approach and empathy
Cours n° 2: Understanding empathy and the conditions for its implementation
4h

Content

In Course n°1, we saw how to make an understanding of empathy emerge from practice. How do we conceptualize knowledge about empathy based on action, from a pedagogical practice?

Per se, this knowledge already exists, and it is now a question of dealing with the whole issue and then of imagining by what "best" practices one manages to install the conditions of an empathic pedagogy in a class with pupils with special educational needs.

Development

  • What are the main currents of empathy? What are the sciences that talk about it? How is empathy driving the psycho-emotional and psycho-cognitive development of the child?
  • How in a class can we take into account pupils with Special Educational Needs and develop an empathic attitude, both among caregivers and among the group of children?
  • What are the key points for an empathic approach with the autistic child?
  • What empathic pedagogy in practice?

Description of the learning process

We will naturally put caregivers in situations of empathy. Once again, we will be able to rely on audio-visual media from which we will have to proceed by observation to identify situations of empathy in groups of children, in helper / helped relationships. These media will give to see, stimulate exchange and debate on different types of empathy (cognitive, emotional), on various related concepts (neutral and benevolent listening, congruence, authenticity, nonviolent communication, ...).

  • An audio-visual medium is to be worked on / experimented by the research group and it will constitute the starting point of the course.

  • Based on this practical experience of learners with experience sharing, we then introduce the course on empathy through neuroscience which has the advantage of staying very concrete in order to support the construction of palpable representations on empathy among the carer. We can then proceed and finish on the theoretical content related to empathy and its major currents.
